Furniture for Keeping it Green
On February 19, 2012 in Uncategorized
Wood obviously comes from trees, so wood isn’t necessarily eco-friendly if our forests are depleted to make coffee tables. Tree farms supply the demand, so it’s not all bad, but trees take some years to grow, so new supply sources are constantly being expanded. New eco-friendly building materials are lending themselves to eco-friendly environments of today.
Packaging adds to tons of plastics heading to landfills every year, so that’s a drain on going green. Eco-friendly means using materials that are ecological or are recyclable. Eco-friendly means less of a carbon footprint too; that means cutting down on manufacturing processes. Eco-friendly furniture means that nothing about the piece drains the environment, whether the material, or protracted deliveries where tons of carbon emissions pollute the air.
Eco-friendly furniture is furniture that is made from handy materials. It is made from fast growing trees and plants like bamboo, so that supply sources aren’t diminished. It is furniture that is made from all the things that we’ve used and thrown away. Take a look at artisan works of tables made from tires, barn boards, recycled tiles and more. Eco-friendly furniture typically involves cleaner lines so that less is involved in manufacturing. Green furniture also means that little or no chemicals are added to treatments and finishes, making for a more pollutant and toxin free home.
Eco-friendly material such as recycled plastic that looks like wood is an inexpensive green solution to traditional woods. Recycled metals from shipping crates, railroads, manufacturing plants that have been closed, old fencing, old barn wood, recycled tires, recycled cardboard…all of these are just a few options when it comes to green furniture. Recycled cardboard is hip and trendy now; some designers are showing gallery-level pieces made of this cool material. When these chairs are completed, they look like suede. Who knew!
Check into eco-friendly furnishings. Locate dealers and artists by heading online. Search “green furniture” or “eco-friendly” furniture. Add your zip code to find local dealers, so you do your green-part by not adding emissions to the environment by driving around. Be creative. Make your own furniture using recycled materials in innovative ways. Check your local paper…someone’s old furniture could be exactly what you want and you’d be doing your part.
